How Is This Comfortable?

I love to sneak up on the Nodlings and catch them in their natural habitats.

The picture quality stinks because I was laughing too hard and only had my camera phone, but Nod-girl is listening to some music while planking across the arms of two couches.

How is this comfortable?

Not to be outdone, Dab likes to play in the laundry basket -- cartwheels are a normal way of getting out of a basket, right?

Nub likes soccer and football, but sometimes he is unwilling give up on the play, which leads to this awkward pose ...

Chasing Tail

This black snake got his tail literally chased by an angry jay bird across my driveway and down two houses. The bird is unfortunately out of frame, but this snake was in a hurry.

The snake couldn't get away fast enough. It looked like it was running on its elbows. Funniest thing I saw all day.

Vintage Army Jeep

Saw this cool vintage army Jeep at the grocery store the other day. It's the real McCoy, probably circa-Korean war.  Which means, this is one really, really uncomfortable vehicle.

Cool though.

Great Span

There is tons of construction going on the Interstate I drive to work every day. (Yes, sadly, I've been going downtown again for the last several months.)

The other day I passed by this 18-wheeler with a 30-foot (40? 50?) steel span for a bridge or overpass on its bed. Don't try to pass this guy in a narrow spot!

Road Hog

Almost got ran off the road by this oversize load on the highway. You don't realize it, but boats are BIG. The truck is taking up more than one lane, as you can see.

Ze Trike

Not sure what to call it, but these 3-wheeled motorcycles are popping up all over. The odd part is they have two wheels in front, one in back. More stable? Maybe ...

Still Life With Cameraphone: Horse Trailer

Despite all the rampant development in and around Washington DC, the sight of a horse trailer is still not unheard of. City to my right, country to my left - interesting place.

Spy Hunter Roadster

Now I don't claim to be a car buff, but I do know when I see something different.

I was behind this guy at a traffic light and noticed this little square panel with an arrow pointing to it on the back of the car. It's not a gas cap, I could see that on the side. It's not for getting in the trunk. I've never seen anything like this before - so I took a picture with my phone.

I took note of the make and model: a Honda S2000 Roadster -- apparently quite the sports car. So what in the world is this panel and why does it have an arrow pointing to it?

Well, Professor Google knows it all, so I finally found an owner's manual (like I'm ever going to own this car, yeah, right). Turns out this unique aperture is -- are you ready for this? -- a tow line.

Well, if you're gonna blow $35K on a two-seater, you can afford to have your own tow hook built in. Shades of Spy Hunter and Peter Gunn! Does it have smoke screen, oil slick, and machine guns too? 'Cause then I think I might be interested.

Still Life With Camera: Helicopter Formation

It's not every day that you see helicopters flying in formation ten feet off the ground. I only caught one of them with my camera phone (while driving!), but it was a sight to behold.

Stingray On Crushed Ice

Blynken and I popped over to our local grocer's (Wegman's!) to pick up some of their awesome Basting Oil. If you haven't tasted it, you're really missing out. (Grapeseed Oil, Canola Oil, Dried Thyme, Dried Parsley, Natural Garlic Flavor). It really makes seafood dazzle.

We were in the fish section and we came upon this fine specimen of a Sting Ray. I'm not sure, but we may need a second bottle.

Reason #7 Why I Hate The Metro

The Washington DC Metro is a marvel of modern engineering - 1968 engineering - and it shows. Perennially underfunded, they don't have a "strategic vision", despite being the nation's second busiest transit system.

This grainy cell phone picture shows water dripping audibly in the tunnel next to the electrified third rail into a grate where the lights go. That green smear under the grate is a rather sizable plant which has volunteered to grow there for a while now. It's got everything it needs -- light, water, soil (presumably), and an inattentive Metro management.

Do you think the train is maintained any better?

Adventures In Metro: The Dish

We've had a lot of high winds in Washington, D.C. lately. That may explain why this dish was being removed.

Also, you can't have a dish much bigger than this one, because it won't fit down the alley!

Pole Position

These giant "telephone" poles south of the Manassas Battlefields, mentioned before, have now disappeared. There were matching poles on the other side of the road as well. I now think they were there temporarily while they worked on the power lines to prevent a dropped line from falling in the roadway.

Either that, or somebody stole six 50-foot poles when nobody was looking...

Adventures In Metro: Barrels

A strange sight greeted me this week at the McPherson Square Metro station in D.C. Looks like oil barrels.

The palette is clearly some homeless man's bed in the evening, but the barrels are a mystery. What can they be?

Office Santa

Some folks at the office were really getting into the holiday spirit. Since this happened in a Government office I'm shocked they got away with it. But since when has the Government let rules get in their way, especially their own?

Never mind that it's still Advent. Heeeeerrrrrrrrrrre's Santa! (and his reindeer!)
And yes, Santa is on a real, movable sleigh. Impressive.

Behind Door #1

Ever wonder what lies behind those massive concrete walls next to the highway?

Well, if you drive by Tyson's Corner on I-495 the answer is apparently "nothing". Yikes!
Guess they're working on it.

Power Poles Or Gallows?

I see these telephone poles every time I head south of the Battlefields. They look a lot like three crosses. They don't have a purpose I can divine. Ignore the silver power poles; notice the yellow ropes tied to the wood posts. Don't know what they are there for (don't want to find out the hard way). Keep drivin'.

Still Life WIth Cameraphone: Pink Mansion

I live in a modest neighborhood, but not far from my development someone has been building a mansion for the last several months. I've met people for whom wealth has not been a source of greed, but not many. With people in our own county going hungry, how can you justify building this obscene mansion for yourself to live in? Unless you're going to move a dozen handicapped children in with you, or something. This is just sinful in my estimation (and no, I don't know these people). Every time I pass by this place, it just makes me irritated.

That, and what doesn't come through due to my poor camera phone quality is that in real life this mansion has a very real pink hue to it. Pink houses? Pink mansions? If you have that kind of money to build this kind of house, WHY would you make it pink? I guess great taste doesn't follow big money.

Purple Boots

Somebody I know mentioned wanting flat purple boots. So when I saw these walking down the street, I knew I had to get a shot with my trusty camera phone.

Plus, my new Mac has a sweet alpha filter built into Preview that auto-magically removed the background. Sweet!
