LOTR: How It Should Have Ended

I've been working late for a while now to finish up a project. In the evenings after everyone has gone, it gets really, really quiet and a bit dark. I'll be working steadily when I hear a distant "Thoom".

A low, echoing, booming sound that you can feel through the floor. Thoom. Like someone is beating a giant steel drum. Thoom. Thoom. Drums. Drums in the dark.

An ominous sound, and unexplained. Sitting there late in the evening in my dark hole listening to the dull repetitive thumping, it reminds me more than a little of Khazad Dum, the Mines of Moria, from The Lord of the Rings.

A great story, one of my favorites. Of course there are people who feel it should have ended differently and saved everyone the trouble.

Forgiveness: Rosario Rodriguez

From time to time WBN brings you the work produced by Spirit Juice Studios, including music videos, digital shorts, and inspirational videos. SJS is at it again, this time with a piece on forgiveness with Rosario Rodriguez.

It's a powerful story that I know you'll enjoy.

[YouTube] On June 29th, 2009 Rosario was a victim of a robbery and was shot in the chest. The doctors are calling her a miracle as the bullet missed her heart by 1 cm. Her esophagus was hit by the bullet and severely damaged while fragments of the bullet hit both of my lungs. It took 8 hours of intense surgery to repair her esophagus. The doctors placed two tubes in her right lung and one in her left to drain them after they collapsed. Her doctors and surgeons said she would spend at least two months in the hospital but thanks to the prayers from many around the world and by the Grace of God she was released only 10 days after the incident. She spent a month and a half recovering in LA where she had been living and her friends took very good care of her. She has now flown home to west Michigan to stay with her family and am working her way to a full recovery, which will take about two years.

To follow her journey of recovery, the trial, whatever is going on in her life and whatever is on her mind. Check out her blog:

Fight Of The Century: Keynes vs. Hayek Round Two

All the interest I have in Economic Theory can be found on the back of a cereal box.

However, this clever video pits the two most influential economists of our times against one another in an entertaining movie-boxing-rap-throw-down.

In one corner, John "Top-down" Keynes advocating more government spending and circular money flow. In the other corner, F.A. "Bottom-up" Hayek supporting less government spending and demand-based economy.

Not sure who's the winner, but Econ 101 would have stuck with me better with a video like this.

It's been a while since I've enjoyed a good laugh from those crazy toons at Homestar Runner.  I don't even like techno music, but this always makes me laugh: the system is down...!

Pope: Every Child Needs The Love Of Family

Remarks from the Holy Father.

"The Holy Family is certainly unique and unrepeatable, but at the same time it is a model for every family, because Jesus, true man, chose to be born in a human family, and in so doing, "He has blessed and consecrated that institution."

These were some of the words of Pope Benedict XVI during the Angelus prayer with the faithful in St Peter's Square on Holy Family Sunday.

Pope Benedict stressed that the birth of a child "is not just a reproductive act, " saying that child does not need a great deal of "external comforts, " but rather "the love of a father and a mother," and " the warmth of a family."

"That," said Pope Benedict, is what gives children real security," said the Holy Father.

Know Your Meme: Om Nom Nom

Mrs. Nod made chocolate chip cookies today, and so after dinner I did what every red-blooded American dad would do: Om nom'd some major cookies.

What's that? You don't know what nomming is? Didn't you watch Sesame Street? Cookie monster is only the best Muppet ever!

Never fear, WBN is nothing if not a public service on Teh IntarWebs. It's time to listen up to: Know Your Meme.

This just speaks to my inner geek: non-Newtonian fluid. See Adam Savage "walk on water".

Research DS: Revolutions

Interesting. Spirit Juice Studios has a video promoting Research Down Syndrome (RDS).

From the website ResearchDS.org:
Research Down Syndrome (RDS) is a non-profit foundation that supports Down syndrome cognitive research, an area that in the last 5 years has experienced great advances towards developing biomedical therapies to treat the cognitive impairment of people of all ages with Down syndrome. The potential of these treatments to address Down syndrome cognitive dysfunction is tremendous - improving memory, learning and communication – and expanding and enhancing life opportunities for these individuals.

Until recently, the medical and research community considered the cognitive impairment associated with Down syndrome to be too complex to understand, offering no hope for the development of treatments. Now scientists have identified unique biological mechanisms associated with cognitive dysfunction in Down syndrome, suggesting the promise of targeted biomedical therapies that could lead to improvement in the intellectual difficulties experienced by those with Down syndrome.

In recent decades, improved health care, expanded educational and community opportunities, and the support of families and advocacy groups has improved the quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome. As a result, the life expectancy of those with Down syndrome has more than doubled -- underscoring the importance of development of treatments that will assist this population to achieve and maintain independent living. We believe that individuals with Down syndrome should have access to effective drug therapies in a manner consistent with many medical conditions.

Research Down Syndrome(a 501(c)(3) approved foundation) will support world-class scientists with the goal of continuing these revolutionary advances. RDS, through personal contributions and the support of friends, has already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support Down syndrome cognitive research. This support and RDS’ low administrative costs ensure that 100% of all contributions go directly to research.
