Skins Win

It wasn't pretty, but it did work: the Redskins beat Dallas on Sunday night (and really we don't care about much else). A win is a win, and doubly sweet since it is a Conference game (i.e., it really counts).

One thing I'm still having trouble adjusting to is seeing Donovan McNabb in a Redskins jersey. I'll take it, though -- any day rather than Jason Campbell!

Saints Go Marching In

I think that about says it all. It's all about the 4th quarter points. I feel bad for Peyton and the Colts, but it's hard not to admire the Saints for their hard luck story and Cinderella comeback.

Catholic Superbowl Food

Are you ready for some football?

The Nodlings enjoy watching football with dear old Dad. My boy, Wynken, likes football; the toddlers, Nub and Nib, love to shout “Touchdown!” on every play; the older girls, Blynken and Nod-girl, just like hanging out and eating my snack food.

So with one hand on the remote to avoid the commercials and one eye on my snack plate, we are getting ready to enjoy the Game-That-Must-Not-Be-Named-Due-To-Litigious-Copyright-Holders.

A major part of The Game ™ of course is the football food. Catholics everywhere will be watching (and eating) along with the rest of the nation at the biggest football game of the year.

Everybody’s got their favorite football food; Catholics are no exception. So how will you know if you’re at a Catholic Football Fest? Let’s take a look at a sample menu:

  • Beer: choice of Don De Dieu (Gift of God) or Angel City Ale
  • Saints 7-Sacramental-layer dip
  • Hotter-than-Hades wings
  • Dante's Onion Rings of Hell
  • Immaculate Reception drink holder
  • St. Lawrence's Barbeque Wings
  • Jalepeno Popers
  • St. Stephen's Stoned Wheat Crackers and Cheese
  • Heavenly Hash ice Cream
  • B16 Burger and Fries
  • Crusader Chili Dogs
There have to be more! Your suggestions in the combox; let's have some fun.

The NFL And Abortion

Next Sunday we'll hear a lot about two things: the winner of the Superbowl and the Superbowl commercial featuring Tim Tebow, star quarterback of the Florida Gators and Heisman Trophy-winner.

The 30 second ad will be the heartwarming story of how Pam Tebow ignored doctor's advice to abort her baby when she contracted amoebic dysentery and delivered a healthy son who has grown up to be a star on and off the field. The ad, which hasn't been released, is being billed as more pro-life in the best sense of the word as opposed to anti-abortion.

Whether the ad ever sees the light of day is irrelevant at this point. The message has gone out far and wide thanks to the radical feminazis' paroxysms of outrage over at NOW and NARAL. The nation is talking, having that dialog that anti-science abortion groups have tried to prevent. The increased use of ultrasound technology makes clear that the subject of an abortion is a human baby and not an inert clump of cell with "heart tones".

Despite active attempts to hide the truth and a relentless barrage of "pro-choice" messages by almost every mainstream media outlet, a majority of the people in the country today consider themselves "pro-life", according to Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey. And increasing numbers of those people are the young, who will determine the future of the country. This is hardly surprising, since abortion advocates can't be expected to reproduce in appreciable numbers; they literally kill off their point of view.

Tim Tebow is not the first football star to come out in support of the pro-life cause. Giants co-owner Wellington Mara made a short video in 1989, "Champions For Life," in which members of the 1987 Superbowl Champion New York Giants spoke out against abortion.

That was twenty-two years ago. Now the next generation's turn to step up and speak out has come. That is exactly what twenty-two year old Tim Tebow is doing.

You can thank his mom.

Amazing Wins

I thought it was over with 4 minutes to go and the Patriots up 17 points. But the ever-resilient Colts (go Peyton Manning!) slugged it out to a 35-34 finish. Never say die!

Even the woeful Washington Redskins chalked up a convincing win today by 10 points over the Broncos.

Dallas lost and nearly got shut out by the Packers, and Farve led the Vikings to a comfortable win over the Lions. All in all a happy football day.

Redskins Put Up a Giant Stink

Whew! What is that horrible stench enimating from New York tonight? Oh, wait, it's just the Redskins stinking up the field -- again. The Giants just dominated in the Skins' season opener.

I'm a fan, and I'll stick with my team to the end, but does it have to be so painful from Game 1?
In true Redskins style, the team put up a lackluster performance for 3 quarters, got behind, and then tried to win on heroics in the 4th quarter, only to fall short.

Is it so much to ask that they either win or lose starting in the first quarter and just spare us the drama?

Almost Time For Football

After last week's disappointing pre-season performance it was, well, less disappointing to watch the Redskins lose this week. The Redskins only lost to the Patriots by a field goal. Since only the first half counts in pre-season (that's when the starters play), Jason Campbell and team battled the Patriots to a 17-all tie at the half -- that's progress.

Cooley broke the stagnation by catching a pass and running down the sideline for over 70 yards. Now that's excitement. I finally got a good look at the guy whose running style is described as a "broken beer truck" -- how apt! That lumbering thunder-wagon has got great hands and is a potent weapon, whether blocking or recieving. Lumber on!

Mad About Madden

Well, sad would be closer to the mark than mad, but it still has that Aw, man! quality about it.

Legendary coach and NFL broadcaster John Madden has decided to hang up his cleats for good. Madden announced his retirement in a statement Thursday morning.
"It's time. I'm 73 years old...It's been such a great ride...the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion - it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have...It's still fun and that's what makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision."
Madden is famous for being involved with nearly the entire history of American football, first as a player (both offense and defense) at California Polytechnic State University, then as the coach of the winning SuperBowl XI Oakland Raiders, then as an NFL broadcaster. Younger generations know him from his successful video game titles of Madden NFL. NBC Sports director Dick Ebersol confirms that Chris Collinsworth will replace John Madden on NBC.

I don't know about you, but Monday Night Football (now Sunday Night Football) will never be the same without the dynamic duo of Madden and Michaels. I just loved to hear the man talk; some people ridiculed Madden for saying the obvious sometimes, but Madden beats anyone out there hands-down for sheer knowledge of the game from personal experience. Who else in all of football could make stars out of front linemen?

And now who will carve the Turducken on Thanksgiving?

It's the end of an era. Thanks, John, it's been good.

I Can Stop Anytime

Congratulations to the "Six-burgh" Steelers on their SuperBowl victory.

Now what am I going to do on Sunday afternoons for the next six months? No really, that's not withdrawl symptoms; honest, I can stop anytime; I don't even play fantasy football.

4th Day of Christmas

On the 4th Day of Christmas ...

We went to Mass and watched the Redskins' football season officially end.

I guess both religious obligations are now fulfilled.

Stiff Arm to the Solar Plexus

Nub's practicing his football moves. The team could use some help after last week's game.
